Why Blog? Why Read?

networknode.jpgHugh MacLeod has been a favorite blogger and cartoonist of mine for a long time. I love his sensibility about the world and those of us living in it, because his cartoons look at life through the unabashedly sarcastic and cogent little voice that resides deep inside everyone's head, the same one that when it escapes prompts you to ask "Was that my outside voice?" And yet, or maybe because of this, he really has his finger on the pulse of marketing and creativity and a general wittiness that hits just the right nerve.

Anyway, today over at Gapingvoid he said:

"6 years and 4000-odd blog posts later, if I was allowed to keep only one blog post, it would be this one. Which one of yours would you keep?"
Mine is this one.

It made me start to think about blogging and the point of this whole enterprise... there are so many bloggers out there spouting so much stuff-- why is what we say important or worth noticing? Why does it matter? Why do we do it? I'm not asking in a pejorative sense, because this just made me curious. I do this because it's an outlet for me, not for anyone else. I was keeping the same kind of journal (albeit without the feedback) before the advent of blogging, and for me it's about the outlet, not the validation. And it's easier than making nine zillion phone calls to tell everyone what I'm up to.

So I'm taking that question one step further-- those of you who read here, even if you've never commented before, drop a line in the comments and tell me:
  1. If you're a blogger too, why do you do it? And what's your one top entry you've ever posted? (UPDATE: Meaning your most favorite or the one you're proudest of.)
  2. If you're not a blogger, or even if you are, why do you like to read the blogs you read?

I am a blogger. I started doing it as a catharsis. (Can you even use the word catharsis that way?) Now I love it.

Oh yes, I also make money from it.

By top post do you mean the one with the most comments, the one that got the most attention or the one that I like the best?

I meant the one you like the best or are proudest of. Which could also be the one that got you the most attention too, I guess. :)
